How to arrange the child's room: 7 principles and some ideas

At first glance, arranging the little one's room seems like a game. You need to have a bed, some toys, some closets / boxes for storing them and their clothes and ... that's it. But there is a difference between a room with some furniture and a place where you can feel good, for hours on end. A place that meets the needs of the girl / boy for the next 4-5 years, with all the developmental changes that that period brings.

So how do you come up with a children's room that is comfortable and functional? How do you create a space that stimulates his imagination and development?

We have outlined some guiding principles below:

Practical rules for arranging your child's room

To be truly successful, any children's room design project will be based on a set of practical rules that any parent can apply. Here's what we suggest you do:

Take into account your child's needs

Take into account your child's needs

In order to take into account your child's needs, you will first need to know them! So, get your hands on a pencil and a piece of paper!

Yes, a pencil, a paper and a plan of the child's room will save you from many subsequent headaches. It's important to know - or plan - the size of the room, the location of the windows and the door, how the door opens, the brightest area in the room - or the time of day when the room is brightest.

The next step is to pass on the child's needs. You can do this by answering a few questions:

  • How big is the baby?
  • Is it a single child's room or is it a children's room?
  • What are his needs now?
  • What are his needs in a year? But in 2 years?
  • How do needs translate in terms of furniture purchase?
  • What pieces of furniture do you have?
  • What is the current procurement budget - if so?
  • What are his interests now?

It wouldn't hurt to ask his opinion! Get him involved! Have him choose between two colors, ask him if the toys should sit in this corner or the other, even if he is not even 4 years old. It will be a process he will remember fondly later.

Consider the age of the child

The most delicate part of designing a children's room is the fact that you have to take into account both his needs, from now on, and the needs he will have in the next 2-4 years.

A 2-3 year old toddler will have other needs than a preschooler or a 10 year old child. That's why youth room design ideas are so different! But you can take that into account later.

You can think of changes to the room every few years, when the child moves to a new stage, or you can think of things in the longer term, which include two stages. You can have a bed that meets the needs of the child from the age of 6 to 7, when you can redecorate the room and adapt it to new needs: for example, more space for study (an office to do homework ), less for play, maybe a more spacious library.

Consider modular furniture, which changes and "grows" with the child.

Organize and plan the space

Organize and plan the space

Where do we have the play area and where do we have the storage area? With the answers noted above and a small inventory of furniture, the next step is to delimit the main areas of the room.

A children's room should have the following areas:

  • Rest area
  • Storage area
  • Playground
  • Study area - if the child is more than 6 years old

Why is such a division necessary? It will help you, you know what kind of furniture you put where, and it will help her / him, who will teach you to delimit things, and grow responsibly - “Now we play, here, and then we gather our toys and we put it here ”.

Now it's time to draw!

Now it's time to draw!

Usually, we start with the location of the bed and the delimitation of the rest area - which can also have a bedside table, a night light, etc.

Then draw the storage area - how many cabinets / boxes are in the inventory? Am I enough?

The play area can be a large, central space - delimited by a funny carpet (with car tracks, for example) and warm, or it can even be an area where the wall is the main character, as a coloring board. Apopo coloring page, create color accents in your apartment using the color of the year 2022 !

What about the study area? Where does natural light come from and where would it be best to put a desk or a table?

After sketching all the elements in the room, imagine what it would be like to be in the room: could you move lightly? But would your child feel good here? Would it be easy for him to move and get to his stuff?

Another thing you can do is to measure every piece of furniture you have at the moment and mark, on the floor, with paper tape, the space it occupies. It will help you make the necessary adjustments.

Make the space more efficient

Make the space more efficient

Going by the "less" principle means "more" and avoid crowding the room with furniture. As the child grows, you can replace certain elements: something "comes out" and something "enters", but keep this ratio of 1: 1.

It's tempting to create a themed room, especially if you know what he likes right now. But maybe in a year he'll like something else. Instead, think of some small accents: sheets with the character you like, a mural (can be a sticker), a rug. All this can be easily replaced.

Light or lights? The lighting in the children's room must be appreciated at its true value and thought beyond functionality.

The spots give a certain warmth to the room, a lampshade with a lampshade creates a focus area under it, and the functional light placed in the vicinity of the bed encourages reading.

And last but not least, string lights create a fairytale atmosphere and provide the security that children who are afraid of the dark need.

Baby Room Ideas

We have already offered you some principles on which you can base the arrangement of the children's room. Now we will briefly present some popular ideas for arrangement and design for the children's room!

Small children's room design

From the design phase, we thought of apartments that were as spacious as possible, so that each member of the family could enjoy the well-deserved comfort. Of course, there are situations in which you have to deal with a smaller room for your child.

The arrangement principles will not be very strict, but you have to pay more attention to the furniture, but also to the colors. To give the impression of more space, rely on the best possible lighting. In turn, the furniture will be light in color and as easy to use as possible, preferably with as many storage spaces as possible.

Girls room design

Girls room design

It may sound like a stereotype, but the girls' room should contain something pink. This is because, at least at an early age, girls are passionate about stories and fairy tales with princesses and will be very happy if this imaginary environment can be translated into everyday life.

So rely on light, pastel colors, such as pink, beige and white, and the textures can be slightly vintage. However, do not make decisions that cannot be changed any time soon. Maybe the little one will want to leave her mark on the camera in a few years.

Boys room arrangement

The boys 'children's room will be a little different from the girls', and here you can introduce a little bolder colors. Don't forget about toys or other objects related to his hobbies. As with girls, there is a traditional color and this is blue, but you should not abuse it. Instead, you can combine it with shades of yellow, orange or green, for a slightly more cheerful design.

In addition to the sports-themed decorations, if you look at the rooms for modern boys, you will also discover types of special furniture, for example those that incorporate the bed and the wardrobe or other storage spaces.

Brothers room arrangement

Regardless of the age or gender of the siblings, the arrangement must convey to them that each of them can enjoy a distinct space. It would be preferable for the age difference not to be very large.

The most used object in the process of delimiting the space will be the bed itself, but also the objects around it: bedside table, wardrobe, table. Choose bed linen and / or accessories according to the preferences of each child. Be careful, however, to maintain a chromatic harmony. In this case you can successfully use a mirror type arrangement.

If more than two children live in the room, rely heavily on bunk beds.
